This game supplement can be woven by any DM into a simple-to-run campaign with flavorful lore and all-new player classes, each with their own feel but with superb party cohesion in mind, all without the hours of prep time a new campaign requires. Each session sets the party out on a new adventure with a common goal, while leaving the approach to resolving the adventure entirely dependent on player choices.
It's extraordinary for players who particularly enjoy challenging and fun combat scenarios.
It also serves as a perfect stand-in or occasional one-shot when the DM needs a break from your regular game. On those nights, ANY player can be the hero of their game night by pulling out these pages and having an exciting session set up and ready to play in a matter of minutes.
The design also makes it an easy entry point for new GMs looking to get their first game up and running while keeping it simple and for new players who are interested in quick-paced, action-packed adventures to sink their teeth and claws into, wrapped in the deep lore of dragons and their kobold followers.
-
The Great Game: Kobolds and Dragons™ works perfectly for both. While designed to be played as a quick-progression 1-20 campaign, you’ll also be ready to play a one-shot adventure at any level with minimal setup. Each adventure is self-contained with a beginning, middle, and end and victory conditions that depend on the dragon patron your players choose.
-
Yes and no. As kobolds, the players serve dragons and act as their game pieces in The Great Game that their kind play amongst themselves. Each session is a new mission, and depending on the type of dragon the players choose to serve, there are a number of approaches from which they can tackle each mission. So yes, the adventure scenarios are predetermined and have the potential for combat opportunities where players can stretch the limbs of the new mechanics provided for each of the 12 kobold classes <gasp>, but such is the glorious, often brief life of a Kobold Hero in the service of a powerful dragon.
-
This supplement is not designed with children in mind. The life of a kobold is dangerous and often brief, and the world in which they live consists mostly of things that want only to rob and murder them. Plus, there is a pinch of adult language sprinkled into the text, so a certain level of maturity is required to tackle the scenarios and themes within these adventures.
-
Kobold Hero and The Great Game are compatible with 5E and its core three books.
-
The Great Game: Kobolds and Dragons™ is designed to be played within its own self-contained system. The subclasses are not balanced for use in campaigns alongside other official materials.
-
That depends on your players, who can play through these scenarios as deadly serious business, or take the more whimsical approach. The tone of the game is based largely upon the type of dragon your players choose to serve. Players who choose to serve a scheming green dragon will likely find their motivations and tactics to be much darker than those who choose to serve a frolicsome brass dragon.
-
The new kobold classes and scenarios herein range from levels 1-20, and each scenario is designed for a party of Kobold Heroes of a particular level.
-
The Great Game is designed for players with a little experience under their belts, but because the kobold culture presented herein is self-contained, first-time DMs may find it much simpler to manage than a full open-world campaign.
-
Each session is designed to be completed in two to three hours, depending on the approach the players take to accomplish their missions.
-
Each session includes opportunities for each of the three pillars of RPGs: Combat, Exploration, and Role Playing. There are plenty of puzzles to solve, a bit of mystery and intrigue to keep players guessing, and of course, traps. Kobolds love traps.
-
Each book has beautifully drawn artwork commissioned from the fantastic Evan on Freelancer.com captured the beauty of the old-school artwork found in the classic RPG books that so many of us cut our teeth on.
The DMs guide, called The Great Game, includes twenty self-contained adventures as well as backgrounds for dragon patrons, kobold warrens, and a variety of NPCs. Each session is set up as a two-page adventure complete with maps, objectives, and complications.
-
The Great Game and Kobold Hero are available in both digital and very affordable print formats.
-
The same adventures can be replayed from different approaches and with different objectives, depending on the type of dragon the Kobold Heroes choose to serve. With some slight tweaking, many of the scenarios could be useful as a stand-in adventure or side quest for any party of adventurers.
